Cyanoacrylate: An overview. Cyanoacrylate adhesives (or commonly referred to as “CA” in shorthand) are one of the fastest setting adhesives available today. A variety of formulations exist that offer setting times that vary from just one or two seconds to over a minute. 3.10 Superglue (cyanoacrylate fuming) 1. History 1.1 Superglue was developed in the 1950s by researchers trying to produce an acrylic polymer for the aircraft industry. It found commercial use as an adhesive system for non-porous surfaces, a main advantage being the very short cure time.

Cyanoacrylate Fuming Cyanoacrylate esters (generally the methyl or ethyl ester) are colorless, monomeric liquids sold commercially as quick-setting, high-strength adhesives (e.g., Superglue®). These esters polymerize rapidly at ambient temperature via an anionic mechanism in the presence of weak bases such as alcohol and water (Figure 2).

Cyanoacrylate fuming is a widely used forensic tool for the development of latent fingerprints, however the mechanistic details of the reaction between the fingerprint residue and the cyanoacrylate vapor are not well understood. Here the polymerization of ethyl-cyanoacrylate vapor by sodium lactate or alanine solutions, two of the major components in fingerprint residue, has been examined by monitoring the time dependence of the mass uptake and resultant polymer molecular weight characteristics. The cyanoacrylate must be in gaseous form, hence the latter part of the term "CA fuming." For this to happen, investigators use a small amount of liquid superglue, a heat source and an enclosed chamber.

The fumes from cyanoacrylate are a vaporized form of the cyanoacrylate monomer that irritate the sensitive mucous membranes of the respiratory tract (i.e., eyes, nose, throat, and lungs). They are immediately polymerized by the moisture in the membranes and become inert .

What is the Cyanoacrylate Fuming Method (Super Glue Method)? The super glue or cyanoacrylate method is a forensic science technique that uses the vapors of super glue to develop latent fingerprints. A latent fingerprint is a fingerprint left on a surface as a result of the …

Operating under automatic control, the complete humidification, cyanoacrylate fuming, and fume extraction process proceed without operator intervention according to recommended preset parameters.
